  • Wareham Woman of the Year: Author turned grief into tribute to children

    The Standard-Times
    By Lauren Daley
    CONTRIBUTING WRITER
    December 27, 2010 12:00 AM

WAREHAM — While vacationing on Cape Cod in 2001, Gretchan and Warren Pyne spotted double rainbows in the sky. They stopped to take a video of their 4-year-old daughter Lulu after a fun-filled day at the beach.

Olivia "Lulu" Pyne — a little girl with blond hair, saucer blue eyes and rosy red lips — posed for Dad underneath the double rainbows. She leaned against an unsecured bike rack in a parking lot, and it toppled over, severing her heart and killing her instantly.

"When Lulu died, she was dancing underneath double rainbows," recalled her mother, author Gretchan Pyne of Wareham.

"She's been gone nine years and I've never felt bitter. They say there are phases (of grief), but I don't necessarily believe in phases; I think it comes in waves," Pyne said.

"I believe everything happens for a reason; all of our lives have a purpose. It brings me joy to share Lulu, and I don't find that bitter at all," said Pyne, who has written three children's books featuring Lulu, and has five more in the works.

All proceeds from sales of these books support scholarships and children's charities.

For her efforts to turn personal devastation into common good, Pyne has been named the 2010 Standard-Times Woman of the Year for Wareham. Nominations for the award came from the community and members of the newspaper staff. Recipients were selected by a newsroom committee.

Not only does Pyne write the Lulu books, but every summer, she and her husband invite parents who have lost children to their converted cottage in Wareham, called "Lulu's House of Hope."

"The parents come to Lulu's Cottage, and we walk to go to Lulu's garden, where we have a butterfly release ceremony. We do meditations, and talk to each other," Pyne said.

"It's just through word of mouth that people end up coming. I get a lot of calls when someone has lost a child; I end up doing a lot of phone counseling with people," she said.

Warren Pyne is a chiropractor in Easton, and Gretchan works at his office full-time. Their twin 18-year-old boys, Andrew and Dylon, graduated from Wareham High School last year and currently attend Bridgewater State College.

Gretchan Pyne is currently working on a new Lulu book, to be released this summer, called "I Am The Rainbow."

"I had a dream where I got to visit Lulu in heaven, and she said, 'I'm not under the rainbow — I am the rainbow,'" Pyne recalled.

On her writings, Pyne said, "I knew the world needed to know that this beautiful little girl existed, and parents need to know how precious all children are. Two years after she died, 'Rose-Colored Glasses' was born. When I got the book in my hands, it was truly Lulu saying to me, 'Mom, it's time to find your rose-colored glasses,'" Pyne said.

At first, Pyne donated the proceeds from the book to the Wareham YMCA.

"But then we decided a year and a half ago, it would be great if Lulu had her own foundation, so we could help even more people. We could help families who were grieving, as well," she said.

Pyne is also in the process of creating a documentary, so far untitled, about the power of giving.

"I hope it inspires people, especially those going through a hard time emotionally or financially. We all have our crosses to bear. Sometimes the cross you bear can be your greatest gift. I'm hoping it will teach children and adults that we're all a part of something greater than ourselves," Pyne said.

Sharing more of Lulu's wisdom The wisdom of a 4-year-old girl nicknamed Lulu continues even seven years after her death. "Lulu Decorates Daddy," published in June, is the second children's book written by Davenport native Gretchan Pyne remembering the words of her daughter, Olivia, who died in a freak accident during 2001, when a bicycle rack fell over on her, crushing her heart.

That was the most heart-touching thing I have ever read in a newspaper. My family had just came back to Abington from Falmouth where Lilly, my 11 month old daughter, played for the first time in the ocean. When I finished reading the article I went straight upstairs to Lilly's crib and rubbed her head for an hour while she slept.

Of all the toys she has, her favorite things are books. I plan on getting her 2 more...

    Thank you,
    Chris

From The Standard Times By Tyra Pacheco 12.12.2003
". . .The two were driving in a car, and Mrs. Pyne was not in the best of moods. Lulu, in the back seat, donned a pair of rose-colored glasses. She then offered them to her mother. But Mrs. Pyne resisted.
"After much pleading and begging, I tried them on and it changed my whole perspective on the world around me," Mrs. Pyne recalled. "We ended up having a really beautiful day. In that moment I listened to my child, and I allowed her to change our entire day. (Children) see things so clearly. We get the grayness and they see all the colors."
Mrs. Pyne was inspired to write a book about that special day.
"Lulu's Rose Colored Glasses" is a book about the wisdom of simplicity and seeing the world through a child's eyes. . . ."

From The Wanderer By Kenneth J. Souza 12.11.2003
". . .although the story itself may seem like an appropriate literary metaphor for viewing the world with optimism, Gretchan insists the tale is true. In fact, each copy of the book comes with a tiny pair of rose-colored glasses tied to it with a ribbon, just like the ones Olivia wore on that day. "Her father bought her those glasses two to three weeks prior and she lost them," Ms. Pyne said. "It was a typical New England day, and I was feeling really bummed out and she found the rose-colored glasses in the car. The story did happen the way it is in the book! It was so profound to me how she changed my perception that day. I know the rose-colored glasses are a symbol of that and it makes it that much more special to me." . . .

We, as a family flew to Warren, Ohio in March to spread Lulu's message of love and hope to the Warren/Youngstown/Newton Falls Community. Gretchan was the keynote speaker at the Avalon Inn. The event's purpose was to empower mother's and women. It was a day we, as women, joined together to celebrate our lives and each other.

Our trip to OHIO was one of the most amazing Lulu events ever! The Ladies and Children of the Saint Mary and Joseph's School made us feel so loved and welcomed!!! We are forever grateful for their open hearts and their passion to make the world a better place! We will never forget our special time there and know that we will always have a special place in our hearts for all of you at the Saint Mary and Joseph's School. Our special thanks to all of the wonderful media, you allowed Lulu to work her magic and because of you, our event was beyond successful! For Rita, Kay, Wendy and all of you special ladies we are eternally grateful for your hard work, passion and commitment. And for all of you beautiful students... you ARE such bright shining lights! You help us all to remember the reason why we are here!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!!!! Miracles and magic DID happen and now the because of love... a new playground this summer!!!! HOORAY!!!

With much love,
Gretchan, Warren, Dylon, Drew and of course LULU!

All of the money raised went directly to the The Saint Mary and Joseph's School in Newton Falls for a playground for these wonderful children.

The St. Mary and Joseph's school has a wonderful philosophy... That each child is a BEACON OF LIGHT! They teach their children that we can all make a difference in this world no matter how big or small. If ALL of our schools across this great nation of ours would incorporate that very same philosophy, I can only imagine how the world could be changed! Because of their heartfelt attitude, Lulu is going to make a difference in THEIR lives!!!

That is the POWER OF LULU!

Lulu is my "pay it forward." I believe that we can all make a difference BIG OR SMALL!
